Jewish London

London has had a strong Jewish presence since the 11th century. In this evocative and richly illustrated guide to Jewish London, authors Rachel Kolsky and Roslyn Rawson offer a fascinating look at Jewish London today. The Jewish population hovers around 196,000; by contrast, the Jewish population of the entire United Kingdom is slightly less than 300,000. Whether visiting the bagel and falafel bars of Golders Green or the Orthodox community of Stamford Hill, Kolsky and Rawson offer smart and thoughtful observations. The illustrations are especially noteworthy. The wonderful mural "Story of East End" by Beverley-Jane Stewart is a marvel in its own right, while the contemporary photographs place Jewish London in a historical context. All chronicle the changes that have occurred over the centuries. The historic community of Brick Lane, for example, has been transformed from a 20th-century Jewish neighborhood into the well-known center of London's Bangladeshi neighborhood. The guide features a series of walking tours based on Kolsky's experience as a Blue Badge London Tourist Guide with an emphasis on the East End (the Jewish Whitechapel Walk contains everything from historic murals to the site of former settlement houses), Central London and Hampstead. The authors describe synagogues; Jewish or Jewish-themed museums (from the Freud Museum to the Jewish Museum); and kosher cafes, restaurants and shops. In addition, wonderful sections explore aspects of Jewish London in more detail, including a portrait of Disraeli's London (Benjamin Disraeli, the noted 19th-century British prime minister), Holocaust memorials (such as the Holocaust Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Garden in Hyde Park) and Jewish cemeteries. The guide concludes with a glossary of Jewish terms. The book is a must for anyone interested in exploring Jewish life in London past and present.

Food Of The Grand Trunk Road

The Grand Trunk Road conjures up bazaars, heat, spices, silks along India's oldest and longest, much travelled road. This is the taste of India, the real India, with long forgotten recipes from this vibrant route. If you are thinking curry from the local, think again. This book is full of surprises and not what you imagine Indian food to be if you only partake after you have imbibed too much alcohol on a Friday or Saturday night. This is a celebration of Indian food, the people and places along this ancient route. Foods by the road side, egg curry with potatoes, prawn and crab cakes, mustard fish and mango curry, morels in yoghurt sauce, stir fired lotus puffs and peas are just some of the recipes you'll find. You'll visit some of the most interesting areas in India with a brief guide to each region telling us how the cuisine of each region has developed or altered. The photography creates the right atmosphere. This is a delightful book for anyone interested in learning about or cooking Indian food.

The Book of Leaves

It's what it says it is - a visual guide of six hundred leaves representing some of the world's most beautiful trees. It can be used for identification, knowledge, as a treasury of leaves. Each leaf is beautifully photographed, in addition there is a small line drawing of the tree showing height and form, information about the tree and similar species. Also on each page is a map of the world and key facts. It's fascinating to see the subtle differences between species. This is a book that many people would pay ten times the asking price. As an author of gardening books myself that involve much research, I really admire the detail and research that have gone into making this book. It is a triumph. Recommended for anyone who loves trees.

The Garden Bird Handbook

Whether you know your garden birds well or find it hard to recognise more than a sparrow, this is a wonderful book. It not only helps you to recognise birds but also to encourage them into the garden. The book is full of useful information on providing for birds - habitat, food and more. It even gives instructions for making a nesting box. I liked the section on types of gardens for birds, including the £100 a year, 30 minutes a week bird garden. This book has wide appeal and is aimed at everyone. For the real aficionado, there is an interesting look at bird behaviour. The garden bird year will help you to understand migration and what birds are around at a particular time of year. This can be used together with the identification section so that you know what you are looking at. The book includes many colour photographs and very good illustrations of birds.

Feed The World - Birhan Woldu And Live Aid

I am compelled to write this commendation of Oliver Harvey's both moving and deeply disturbing biography of Birhan Woldu "Feed the World - Birhan Woldu and Live Aid" which I have just read. Last night when I tried to sleep all my dreadful nightmares returned as I was back in 1984 trying to feed dying babies.Through my work as an A-CET Trustee and over the years I have come to know Birhan well, so this book was a seminal "must read" task for me. Normally I shun these books, films and reports as my feelings of utter inadequacy return. I feel I just can't do enough and this hurts me deeply. What the book does and what Oliver Harvey has captured in a unique way was how it actually was at that time. By chronologically weaving together world events together with Birhan and her father's indomitable courage and determination, it brings it all alive to me. This is a vibrant resounding story of Birhan and her family, but it could be any of thousands even millions of other Ethiopians who have came through this terrible time stronger. Do not be discouraged to read this because this is a very positive story set in incredible country that tells how "AID", for all its faults and detractors, really does and can work helping to literally change lives, communities and countries for the better. This is compelling read for anyone who cares about the world and humanity. I strongly urge you to read it as it has the potential to change your life as well.

Excellent photography brings an atmosphere of the sea. However I found myself more interested in the photography - beautifully styled in blue, than the recipes. There are some good recipes in here - there are some that are too simple to need a recipe and there are plenty of recipes without a photograph. If you are a real fish lover, then I would buy this book. If you want to expand your simple repertoire, give it a go - you'll find many dishes you perhaps have not thought of. If you are looking for fantastic gourmet recipes to dish up to friends then I would give it a miss. A well priced book that offers good value.

25 Foods Kids Hate (And How To Get Them Eating 24)

How do you get kids to eat foods that are good for them? I remember when I was 10 and I refused to eat anything but pickled onions, pickled cabbage and a mars bar on Sunday afternoons. Fiona Faulkner knows all about finicky eaters. In this book she presents scrumptious ways to get kids to eat the foods they hate. I like the 25 rules and the nutritional tips. Getting the kids involved with cooking is a good start, but beware that in practice if they see the food they hate, no matter how you dress it up, you might have a revolt on your hands. I once cooked bean burgers for some nieces, they loved them. So I thought we would cook them together, when they saw the ingredients they refused to touch them. This colourful book includes all sorts of recipes, even ice creams.

Wild Flower Wonders Of The World

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in wildflowers. Seeing wildflowers in their natural habitat is awesome. If you cannot get to the sites in person, this is a wonderful book to transport you there. The photography is terrific and the book is so colourful. Bob Gibbons takes us to fantastic wildflower places from Europe including Ireland and the United Kingdom, Africa, Asia, Australasia and North America. See the machair of the Outer Hebrides, flowery hay meadows below Mont Aiguille in France, the grasslands of southern Transylvania, the Namaqua desert, rare orchids, mountain scapes and more. Soak up the colour and see flowers as they are meant to be. These natural habitats have a knack of making you realise just how beautiful the natural world is and why we should treasure and preserve such beauty. The text is interesting and informative. Each site has an information panel which helps you to decide when to visit and reasons to go. This is a book I enjoyed very much and is of interest to those who love natural flora, the gardener and the traveller alike.

An informative resource suitable for those interested in the history of civilisations and global politics. The maps place the narrative in a detailed geographical context. Barn Owl

Why should you buy this? Firstly, it is beautifully illustrated will numerous colour photographs which should satisfy even the most demanding 'Tytophile', each showing a different aspect of the owl's lives and behaviours. Secondly, the writing is far from cursory. David Chandler presents the facts in a very thorough yet readable style and looks at Barn Owls across their entire world range, rather than concentrating solely on the UK's birds. An excellent and attractive distillation of what is known about this iconic species

Barn Owl

The writing is both concise and detailed but not too 'heavy' or academic and the book should therefore appeal to a broad readership. The book deserves particular praise for avoiding any hint of Anglocentrism. The numerous references to Barn Owl studies across Europe and particularly in North America give the book a commendably international feel and also draw out interesting differences between populations in size, plumage, food preferences and movements. There are, for example, a number of good photographs of Dutch Dark-breasted Barn Owls. In summary, this is an excellent introduction to the Barn Owl. With large, clear, readable text and an abundance of photographs, it is a highly accessible book that represents good value for money.

Naomi Craft's small book is a handy reference guide to the development of medicine over the years. She takes us through some of the most significant advances in chronological order, with each entry being one or two pages long, and also covering the main people behind the discoveries and breakthroughs, the time of the breakthroughs, and the places the advances originated. There is enough context and surrounding information in each short article for the book not to feel too much like a dictionary and, as everything is in chorological order, it is something you could read to get a general feel for the history of medicine.

This is a technical book that takes you through every element of learning perspective. This new approach studies perspective in depth - it is not for the beginner or the hobby artist. Over 600 schemes accurately represent how to work out perspective. I did get a little bit lost once we got into the 45 points, but the book starts off simply enough on vanishing points etc. I know many artists who struggle with perspective and I don't think this book would help them much. However if you are into technical drawing and have a mathematical brain, this is the book for you. You will truly learn everything there is to know about perspective. If you really want to grips to grips with perspective, this is a must read. The book is beautifully laid out and the line drawings, as you would expect are brilliant.

Although this is not really a large format book that one normally associates with atlases, it packs in a great deal of information. Anyone interested in empires and older civilisations would do well to read this. It starts with the Sumerians and Egypt and ends with the European Union. The book is divided into several chapters organised by the leading force which forged the empires: war and peace, the classical world, faith, horse, isolation, global empires, nations, industrial capitalism and utopia.

Elizabeth I - Virgin Queen?

Full of interesting facts, this is an enjoyable argument as to whether Elizabeth had secret affairs. I must admit I had never given this any thought. The Tudor court is a fascinating period of history and Philippa has researched the topic well. In places it gets a little bogged down with strings of names and who was related to whom. I like the pictures that are included. I still cannot decide whether Elizabeth was a life-long virgin or bore children. Can you? Worth reading and easily envisaged as a film or TV series, as is Philippa's book 'The Other Tudors' - read both.

The Other Tudors: Henry VIII's Mistresses & Bastards

I wanted to read this because I find Henry VIII a most interesting person. This book told me more than I wanted to know. Gone is my idealised vision of Henry as a man manipulated by his ministers to sire a heir to the English throne. Philippa does not quite persuade me that Henry was romantic, seeking the perfect woman and love. Instead I now view him as a womaniser, a man whose eye was caught by any pretty maid. The book is readable, interesting and well researched. However, owing to the intense nature of the detailed research, small anomalies have appeared. This does not mar the book as a whole. I don't think it is intended for historians but mainly for its entertainment value. I like the way the book is divided up although sometimes this has led to repetition. At times I got lost in the endless strings of names - I read mostly late at night. Yet, Philippa manages to put across the characteristics of the people involved very succinctly. Overall, I think that anyone interested in this period of history will find this book fascinating. Easy to see this as a TV series or film.

Audrey 100

Audrey - what can one say. A fashion icon, an almost perfect woman. This is Audrey both on and off the screen. It contains some fashionable portraits taken by the best photographers in their day including Cecil Beaton plus shots of the real Audrey taken by her family. The photos were chosen by her sons. Photos from 1951-1991 with notes at the back of the book. See her smile, frown and laugh. If you love Audrey, you'll adore this book. A real bonus is the ready to frame photographic print. A beautiful book about a beautiful woman.

Walking Guide: Andrew Duncan's London Walks Map

Highlighting some of the author's favourite London walks with detailed maps, this is superb for visitors but also those living in the capital. The 30 walks include Windsor and Eton. I have visited Kew many times, principally to go to the Botanic garden. On my next visit, armed with this map, I shall be looking for 10 hitherto undiscovered landmarks. Similarly with Richmond, Chelsea, Greenwich, Ham and Hampton Court, places I thought I knew. I shall now be re-discovering these anew plus a whole host of other areas of London with the aid of my personal guide - Andrew Duncan. Compact, pocket map, folds out with clear maps and images.

I can't help but feel that this is one of those books with the wrong title. I thought it would be full of yummy Christmas cake recipes. Instead this book is full of delicious things of an entirely different nature - it's all about decorating not only your Christmas cake but the table too. It is fantastic and does even include a fruitcake recipe. Learn how to decorate your cake from the icing up. Discover flowers and foliage for arrangements in great detail. In addition take that humble fruit cake and turn into a work of art. The recipes for decorating the cake are simply the best. This book is about the spirit of Christmas and is the icing on the cake!

Drawing With Coloured Pencils

This fabulous 128 page book is one of the best I have seen for coloured pencils. There is an excellent introduction. The book then covers four different areas - still life, landscapes, people and animals. In each section, skills are taught such as achieving realism, skin tones and much more. Each section contains four step-by-step drawings, making a total of sixteen. So often with this type of book, the step-by steps are not at all interesting, but this book has achieved a balance between the ease of instruction and maintaining the interest in the subject. I love the turtle, the cat is brilliant too (and I'm not a cat person). I want to have a go at all 16 demonstrations. Well illustrated, this 128 page book is well worth the money.

Britain's Best Seaside Escapes

With 7 million extra spent on holidays in the UK by the British public last year - this is a very timely book. Nothing could be more persuasive in its powers to get you to the British seaside than this guide. Its fabulous photography is stunning, portraying the true beauty of the coastline. A flick through this book could persuade you that you are looking at anything but Britain. The turquoise seas, fabulous stretches of golden sands, tiny sandy bays and coves, beautiful landscapes and incredible sunsets - yes, it's all here in Britain. So forget the long waits at airports, the worry of terrorism, the nightmare of long haul because this book will persuade you that what you want is right here on your doorstep. 38 of the best destinations that will put Britain back on the holiday map. Includes a guide to the area, best places to stay and eat, getting there and places to visit. A couple of years ago, I was amazed by the rugged beauty and long sandy beaches of Tynemouth, not featured but the beauty of our own coastline cannot be denied.

Walking London's Parks & Gardens

Escape the hurly burly of Central London into one of her green havens. This is a little treasure of a book, exploring London's fascinating parks and gardens. Enter 25 peaceful green spaces in the capital city. This updated version includes information on parks and gardens, garden designers and gives the introduction dates of some key plant species. It includes maps, photos and key features of each garden. In addition there are notes on transport, admission, refreshment and seasonal features of each garden. There is also a useful time guide for each garden, although larger gardens such as Kew can be easily divided into two or more trips. An excellent guide to London's major parks and gardens. Part of a series of new guides for Britain, this book explores one of the best areas of Britain and includes the place I love the most - Cornwall. It has enough for first time visitors from those on foot and using public transport to those with cars. For the seasoned visitor, this might not be enough as the unusual has not really been sought out. This corner of England is such a delight that it is so worth while to visit and this is a handy companion for visitors new to the area.
